Opportunity Ponds Wetland Planting

Client: ARCO/BP

Details: In 2009, S&K Environmental installed 1.25 million wetland and upland plants at the Opportunity Ponds near Anaconda, Montana. Two million more plants are to be installed in 2010 and 2011. Opportunity Ponds is an Environmental Protection Agency superfund site and one of the largest in the U.S. They have become a major repository and storage site for Montana’s mining waste. ARCO/BP is committed to the cleanup of this hazardous site to ensure the safety of area residents and the surrounding areas. This is a three year project encompassing over 3,000,000 plants. The contract was awarded to S&K Environmental because of the plant and biologic expertise of our staff and the close proximity of our company to the job site.

Jocko River Restoration

Client: Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) Tribal Fisheries

Details: This project, also known as the Jocko Demo–Reach II project, involved a total recontouring of 1.2 miles of the Jocko River in Arlee, Montana. This project was commissioned by CSKT and employed mostly native workers, giving them unparalleled job experience in an area of work not previously done on the Reservation. S&K Environmental moved over 100,000 yards of soil, dewatered channels, built log and rock structures, constructed coir wrapped soil lifts, and revegetated the entire project including sod and willow transplants. The Stinger, our patented planting tool, was used for efficient planting and for its ability to assist plant growth. The area was reconstructed to match its natural condition after a history of man’s intervention whereby the river was moved to an area it was not previously running through. The project will be ongoing for several years with additional channel adjustments and weed eradication support by herbicide and mechanical means.

Schall–Powell Project

Client: CSKT Safety of Dams

Details: This project was a continuation of the Jocko River Restoration project, an area that is being reconstructed to bring the river back to its natural run. This effort was designed to reconnect the river with its historical flood plains. S&K Environmental excavated, hauled, and reshaped over 30,000 yards of soil and removed manmade berms designed to enclose the river into a straight and narrow path. In addition, 1,800 linear feet of trenches, up to 8 feet deep, were excavated, and logs and willow fascine were placed to create new stream banks. The entire work area was transplanted with willows. We also used the Stinger on this area to assist in planting. The technology is renown for improving plant growth and allowing for faster revegetation. We were selected for this project due to our successful work on the Jocko River Restoration project. Our speed and efficiency are unmatched by any company doing the same type of work.

Little Bitterroot River

Client: CSKT Natural Resources

Details: S&K Environmental reshaped 1,000 feet of the Little Bitterroot in the small town of Nirada, Montana. Work included creating meanders, riffle-pool morphology, installing sod mats, transplanting sod and willow plants, and measures for erosion control. We also installed a 60x14 foot, 80,000 lb. capacity bridge for cattle and farm equipment to cross instead of through the restored river, and fenced off the sensitive environment. The area around the Little Bitterroot River had been damaged by its proximity to farm and ranching operations. This project reestablished the natural contours and meanders of the Little Bitterroot, while considering and providing access solutions for area farmers and ranchers.

Red River Narrows

Client: Forest Service

Details: S&K Environmental was responsible for all plant layout, road obliteration, and reforestation of 5 miles along the Red River Narrows corridor in central Idaho. Over 14,000 plants, trees, and shrubs were planted along the river bed. Work was completed on both sides of the river and motorized vehicle caused damage was repaired to bring the stream area back to its pristine condition. The habitat was restored for fish and animal alike.
